Título: "The Infectious Niche: How Extracellular Vesicles Shape Host–Parasite Interactions"

Resumen:

Giardia intestinalis as complementary models of protozoan infection. In T. cruzi, EVs released by parasites and infected host cells can modulate parasite–host interactions, facilitating invasion, immune evasion, and potentially tissue persistence. Their participation in parasite differentiation and adaptation to different microenvironments further suggests that EVs may contribute to the dynamic construction of niches throughout the parasite life cycle. In Giardia, EVs participate in parasite–intestinal epithelial communication and are rapidly internalized by host cells through different endocytic pathways. Experimental evidence indicates that parasite EVs can cooperate with Giardia to disrupt epithelial barrier integrity, affecting tight junction organization and intestinal permeability. Moreover, vesicles generated during host–parasite interaction may represent a distinct population carrying information from both organisms. Together, these findings support a broader model in which EVs act as components of an infectious communication network, remodeling the local microenvironment to favor parasite survival, adaptation, and persistence. Understanding these mechanisms may reveal new opportunities for therapeutic intervention by targeting EV production, cargo, or cellular uptake.
